Das Interreg-CENTRAL-EUROPE-Projekt HUMANITA widmet sich der wachsenden Nachfrage nach Outdooraktivitäten in geschützten Gebieten (PAs) in Mitteleuropa und zielt darauf ab, ein evidenzbasiertes und partizipatives Management für nachhaltigen Tourismus zu fördern. Durch die Entwicklung von Tools für die Überwachung von Auswirkungen unterstützt das Projekt PA-Manager*innen dabei, fundierte Entscheidungen dafür zu treffen, um negative Auswirkungen, Konflikte und Umweltverschmutzung zu verhindern. Der Fokus liegt auf transnationaler Zusammenarbeit zur Bewertung von Umweltbedingungen, zur Information von Entscheidungsträger*innen und zur Einbindung der Öffentlichkeit. Durch Pilotmaßnahmen und partizipatives Monitoring mit Tourist*innen und lokalen Gemeinschaften fördert das Projekt das Bewusstsein, den Aufbau von Vertrauen und Verhaltensänderungen. In diesem interdisziplinären Projekt bringt die Forschungsgruppe SIENA (Spatial Informatics for ENvironmental Applications) ihre Kompetenz im Bereich KI-basierte Anonymisierung und Konzeptentwicklung zur automatisierten Besucherzählung ein.

Die Initiative zielt auch darauf ab, Narrative rund um das „gemeinsame Erbe“ zu gestalten, was die politische Entscheidungsfindung unterstützt. Projektergebnisse und Empfehlungen werden durch Kommunikationsaktivitäten geteilt, um nachhaltige Tourismuspraktiken gefördert werden und der Erhalt der Naturwerte für zukünftige Besucher*innen sichergestellt ist.

The INTERREG CENTRAL EUROPE project HUMANITA addresses the growing demand for outdoor activities in protected areas (PAs) in Central Europe and aims to promote evidence-based and participatory management for sustainable tourism. By developing tools for impact monitoring, the project supports PA managers in making informed decisions to prevent negative impacts, conflicts and pollution. The focus is on transnational cooperation to assess environmental conditions, inform decision-makers and engage the public. Through pilot measures and participatory monitoring with tourists and local communities, the project promotes awareness, trust building and behaviour change. In this interdisciplinary project, the research group SIENA (Spatial Informatics for ENvironmental Applications) contributes its expertise in AI-based anonymisation and concept development for automated visitor counting. The initiative also aims to shape narratives around `shared heritage´, which supports policy making. Project results and recommendations are shared through communication activities to promote sustainable tourism practices and ensure the preservation of natural values for future visitors.
