Field trips, meetings with park managers and stakeholders, field exercises and on-site training are an essential element of the Master's programme "Management of Conservation Areas." Of course, theoretical foundations, science-based concepts and definitions are important in this Master's programme.

"But you can only gain direct experience in the field and in the confined protected areas," says Michael Jungmeier, scientific director of the programme.

A stay of several days in the Hohe Tauern National Park offered the students the opportunity to go for a walk with the Tauern llamas, among other experiences. The hike offers the opportunity not only to get to know the region, but also to meet the llamas personally. The animals can be stubborn at times, but they are quite lovable companions as well.

At the BIOS National Park Centre, the students had the opportunity to learn about the functionalities of a modern visitor centre. National Park Director Peter Rupitsch personally welcomed the students and explained the history and the challenges of the park. An exploration of the Seebach valley guided by Klaus Eisank illustrated the challenges and solutions in wildlife management of the National Park. In celebration of its 40th anniversary, we would like to wish Happy Birthday to Hohe Tauern National Park, and thank you for the interesting insights.
