The students will understand the basic concepts how numerical methods for solving partial differential equations work. Further, the students should be able to define a boundary value problem using adequate boundary conditions.

The course gives an introduction in numerical methods for solve partial differential equations.
Discussed topics are: the Ritz method, derivation of a functional, example, method of weighted residual, Galerkin method.
Further the finite element method based on triangular and rectangular isoparametric finite elements will be discussed. Some practical examples as: electrostatic and magnetostatic problems, eddy current problems in frequency domain and time domain will be demonstrated.
