This project is based on the belief that fungi and their mycelium networks are among the most sustainable and transformative organisms, with great potential for future applications. Although Carinthia strongly focuses on sustainability, circular economy, and regional value creation, the topic of fungi has so far been largely underrepresented.

The project aims to introduce fungal knowledge to Carinthia, build regional expertise, and create a foundation for innovation in areas such as agriculture, environmental remediation, medicine, and sustainable materials. Carinthia University of Applied Sciences acts as a key multiplier, supported by interdisciplinary experts and a strong focus on gender equality and interculturality.

Fungi can turn organic waste into valuable resources, support soil health, bind CO₂, break down pollutants, and enable the development of fully biodegradable materials. The project includes education, networking, experimental labs, and a digital knowledge platform to raise awareness and involve schools, youth, science, and regional businesses.

Overall, the initiative aims to transform the perception of fungi—from simple forest organisms to a central pillar of sustainable innovation—and to establish a long-term, regionally rooted fungi innovation ecosystem in Carinthia with global relevance.
