Yelbek Utepov, PhD, MSc (Kazakhstan) – Alumni Spatial Information Management

Summer 2016 was very special for me because I graduated from the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences (CUAS, Villach, Austria). I studied the Master degree program “Spatial Information Management” there for two years, under the gSmart Erasmus Mundus scholarship. This degree opened good job opportunities for me in my home city Astana, Kazakhstan. I returned to Astana in September 2016 and continued working in the Department of Civil Engineering at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University in the position of Acting Associate Professor. My duties involve lecturing and supervision of several students doing their Bachelor, Master and PhD theses. So far nine Bachelor and five Master students graduated under my supervision. One PhD student is expected to graduate in 2019. Ever since my return I have been working on improving my skills and broaden my knowledge to become a good lecturer and researcher.

In October 2016, I was invited to join the biggest construction company of Kazakhstan, the BI Group. At that time BI Group opened a completely new corporate Research and Development (R&D) Center for Kazakhstan, where I was hired as an expert. In this R&D Center, my colleagues and I investigated and tested different technological solutions like BIM, GIS, CIS, 3D printing, 3D scanning, photogrammetry, Internet of Things, Big Data, Smart House, Drones, UAVs, use of robots, etc.. Most of these technologies have been familiar to me from the lectures I attended at CUAS. Besides the technology transfer into BI Group, my colleagues and I developed and patented a new type of concrete with short period of hardening, new type of concrete mixture for a 3D printer, and method of pouring concrete. The excitement of developing something new motivated me to apply in 2017 for a three year funding from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan for a research project related to the new types of concrete. I was awarded this project and I am currently leading it as a Project Manager. Upon finishing the work for the BI Group, I was hired by one of the largest consulting companies in Kazakhstan, the “Center for Strategic Initiatives” (CSI), as junior partner. My focus in the current job is also related to the technological solutions, new developments, research and analytics. Working at CSI is very exciting and promising for me.

Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the gSmart Erasmus Mundus program and their coordinators
for giving me the opportunity to study Masters in CUAS. My special “thankyou” goes to the coordinator of study program, Prof. Dr. Gernot Paulus and all CUAS staff. Their excellent lectures and valuable knowledge have facilitated me in my career and life.
