Smart Materials: Applied research for industry

Carinthia University of Applied Sciences opens CiSMAT research centre

Villach, 18.12. 2019 - On December 17, 2019, the "Carinthia Institute for Smart Materials and Manufacturing Technologies (CiSMAT)" was officially opened on the Villach campus of the Carinthian University of Applied Sciences with representatives from industry and science. The CISMAT research centre supports regional industrial companies and SMEs with know-how in dealing with relevant research questions in the field of Industry 4.0.

The CiSMAT research centre, which is based at the Carinthian University of Applied Sciences and funded by the Carinthian Economic Development Fund (KWF), acts as a contact point for the topic of Industry 4.0. and supports companies from the industrial environment, especially SMEs, in innovative research projects. Pascal Nicolay, head of CiSMAT and responsible body within the research center of the KWF-funded endowed professorship "Smart Materials / Industry 4.0", sees the institution as an important regional measure for jointly mastering challenges of applied research in the field of "Smart Materials".

"The starting signal for the new research centre at the Carinthian University of Applied Sciences was given with yesterday's official opening ceremony. CiSMAT will be dedicated to developing innovations for the society and industry of the future. Divided into three research groups, we will focus on smart materials and high-performance composites, agile manufacturing, additive manufacturing and integrated sensor technology," explains CiSMAT director Pascal Nicolay. In addition to a network of local and international companies, the research center works closely with Austrian, Slovenian and French universities. Selected industrial partners such as Hirsch GmbH, Liebherr Hausgeräte Lienz, PMS Elektro- und Automationselektronik GmbH and Treibacher Industrie AG are already contributing their expertise and helping to strengthen industrial research.

Intelligent materials, so-called "smart materials", have gained in importance in recent years and play an increasingly important role in the development of new, versatile and efficient products. Starting in autumn 2020, a new course on "Materials and Production Processes of the Future" will be offered at the CiSMAT Research Center, focusing on smart materials and 3D/4D printing.
