Supplementary Examinations
In order for your qualification to be recognized as equivalent to the Austrian Matura (higher education entrance qualification), you may have to take Supplementary Examinations.
When are Supplementary Examinations necessary?
The necessity of Supplementary Examinations is assessed individually after you have applied. This is primarily the case if:
- 12-Year Rule: Your schooling in your home country was shorter than 12 years and your certificate must allow you to study at all universities in your home country! In this case, two Supplementary Examinations are prescribed for every missing year.
- Subject-Specific Gaps: Your previous education does not cover the range of subjects required in Austria. This includes the following six subjects as a minimum standard:
- 2 Languages
- Mathematics
- Biology or Physics or Chemistry
- A Humanities Subject (e.g. History, Geography and Economics, Languages, Philosophy, Psychology, Religion, etc.)
- One further general education subject
How does the Process Work?
During your admission procedure, it will be determined which Supplementary Examinations you must complete.
Subject Determination: You will receive an official document detailing the specific number and the exact names of the required Supplementary Examinations. The following Supplementary Examinations are offered:
- Mathematics (German & English)
- Physics (German & English)
- Biology (German)
- German in an Academic Context
- Academic English
The language of instruction depends on the chosen degree program. This means that for German-language degree programs, you must attend and complete the supplementary exams in German. For English-language bachelor's programs, you will be assigned to the English group.
Deadlines: You must successfully complete these examinations before the start of your studies. Without proof, you cannot begin your studies.
Preparation Course: CUAS offers its own course for the Supplementary Examinations. The individual modules (= Supplementary Examinations) are taught online and start at the end of April/beginning of May. For Mathematics (English), a course and an exam will also be offered on site in September.
Examinations: The examinations take place online at the end of June/beginning of July. It is also possible to take the examinations without attending the preparatory courses.
Costs: Participation in the preparatory course costs € 750,- per module, including the examination fee. Taking an examination costs € 150,-.
