Experiential Education – Academic university course
Experiential education as a concept is already several decades old, but has gained additional relevance through the social and professional developments of the last decade.
In the professional field, resilience research developed an understanding of the importance of self-efficacy experiences, which provides the transfer theme of experiential education with new arguments. In addition, results from brain research support basic assumptions about the effectiveness of experiential education settings. In the meantime, there are also elaborated concepts for non-formal learning that reformulate and better substantiate the old "learning by doing". The concept of competence, developed especially in the EU context, as a combination of knowledge, skills, attitudes and actions replaces the division into knowledge and skills on the one hand and values and actions on the other.
This makes it possible to sharpen experiential education as an independent concept and to distinguish it more clearly from leisure education and play education.
The start of the university course is planned for the summer semester 2023. We look forward to receiving your applications.
Continuing education relevant to practice
The target group of the university course in experiential education are primarily employees from the areas of kindergarten, school, extracurricular educational work, open child and youth work, child and youth welfare, but also from adult social work, from the areas of equal opportunities and diversity with a corresponding bachelor's degree or a relevant qualification.

Experiential Education - Aim & Content
The university course "Experiential Education" updates the existing professional concept and combines it with current professional and social developments to create an innovative model. Graduates are qualified to design experiential education settings on the basis of reflected self-awareness and to plan, implement and evaluate projects based on these settings. In addition, the further development of the concept of experiential education, its substantiation with scientific theories and thus its representation in the professional context are further goals of this university course.
Prerequisites for Participation:
The following prerequisites must be met in order to participate in the university course in experiential education:
- Completed Bachelor's degree or
- Professional qualifications amounting to at least 1,500 hours of training (e.g. diploma in social care or specialist social care, diploma in nursing, youth social workers, youth workers, physiotherapists, social workers, etc.) or
- Relevant professional experience of at least 3,000 hours or 2 years on a full-time basis.

The university course in experiential education comprises two semesters and is organized on a part-time basis. Weekend blocks enable the combination of study and work.

Entrance Requirements:
In order to participate the university course in experiential education, the following requirements must be met:
- Completed Bachelor's degree or
- Professional qualifications amounting to at least 1500 hours of training (e.g. diploma in social care or specialist social care, diploma in nursing, youth social worker, youth worker, social worker, physiotherapist, etc.) or
- relevant professional experience of at least 3000 hours or 2 years on a full-time basis
- Completion of the preparatory seminar from 17 to 19 November 2023 at Freinatur Steiermark: Ausbildungen - Freinatur Steiermark (freinatur-steiermark.at)

- Meaningful letter of motivation
