On 11 February 2025, the European Commission, Directorate-General (DG) for Research and Innovation, Directorate D.3 - Health & Societal Transitions invited experts to a policy workshop in Brussels.

As coordinator of the work package “Governance, policy recommendations and solutions” of the Horizon 2020 project ‘MATILDE – Migration Impact Assessment to Enhance Integration and Local Development In European Rural And Mountain Areas’, migration researcher Marika Gruber, representing the lead partner, was invited to provide impulses for the identification of future research priorities in the areas of migration governance, human rights-centered approaches to irregular migration, and the topics of integration and inclusion in the EU.

In the workshop, EU and Member States policymakers, representatives of Horizon-funded migration research projects, members of the European Migration Network, and early-career researchers from the European Research Council (ERC) were brought together to share perspectives on integrating migration research into policymaking and to define the EU future priorities for migration research and innovation. The workshop discussions especially focused on bridging research and policy, exchanging practical insights, and identifying research priorities for the coming years.

“This workshop was a great opportunity to help shape future research topics in the areas of migration and integration in the European Union,’ says Marika Gruber from the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences.
