Agriculture in transition: Expedition group on the road in the Hohe Tauern National Park

Carinthia University of Applied Sciences cooperates as research partner

How is the change in agriculture visible in the national park community of Mallnitz - and why is this important for the future development of Hohe Tauern National Park (HTNP)? The three-day trip "expedition.national.park.2022" with scientists from Carinthia University of Applied Sciences (CUAS) and residents of the region offered space for a new, innovative dialogue for these questions in order to illuminate new perspectives from different angles of the discussion.

Cooperation between Carinthia University of Applied Sciences and Hohe Tauern National Park Carinthia

On May 29th 2022, the "expedition.national.park" had its kick off in Mallnitz. The varied programme - with a total of nine stations and eight participants - was jointly developed in the run-up to the event by the project partners CUAS and the Carinthia part of HTNP. The programme is based on long-term cooperation between the two regional educational and research institutions and was first launched in October 2021. The aim of the cooperation is to strengthen the image of the national park, its cultural, natural and economic significance, and to find opportunities to improve awareness within and outside the region. Peter Granig, Rector of CUAS, emphasised, "It is a great concern for us to sustainably revitalise the research and education landscape in Carinthia with this cooperation and to set regional impulses with national and international visibility”.

Expedition - Insights into the National Park Region

The format of the annually recurring expedition to HTNP and its region includes meeting different stakeholders, getting to know ways of working and doing business together, and gaining deep insights into local experiences. From May 29th to 31st, the expedition group visited nine different stations in the Dösen, Seebach and Tauern valleys, as well as directly in the village of Mallnitz: from full-time and part-time farms, some with direct marketing, to gastronomic establishments with connections to agriculture, to accommodation establishments. Expedition participant Josef Aberger was impressed, "by the solution-oriented development, by the compatibility of land and nature conservation in dialogue." Hans Glantschnig, host of the Stockerhütte in the Tauern Valley, Mallnitz, added, "Talking brings people together! Here, the great diversity in the composition of the expedition group is an enormous advantage for the discussion".

Outlook - Future of the National Park

The scientific processing of the experiences and observations from the expedition will be carried out mainly by CUAS. The aim is to make the results of each expedition available to the public in a written format, in order to create knowledge that is socially robust and can be followed in the long-term. This forms the basis for a common view of HTNP and the development opportunities of the wider region. National Park Director Peter Rupitsch stated at the end of the event, "The expedition provides a successful framework for promoting local awareness of the National Park as a natural, living and economic space for the future, and thus for discussing important development directions together with the residents and scientists. We are already looking forward to the next expedition.national.park 2023!"

The project was funded with support from the Province of Carinthia and the European Union.
