On Friday, 18 September 2020, a satellite congress of the renowned Women in Data Science (WiDS) conference of the US elite university Stanford took place for the first time at the FH Campus Villach. he hybrid (online and offline) conference was attended by over 70 data science users and interested parties.

Women in Data Science (WiDS) Villach is an independent regional conference which is held together with the annual global WiDS conference in Stanford and at more than 200 locations worldwide. The aim of WiDS Villach is to inspire and network the domestic data science scene, regardless of gender, and especially to support women in this field. Further information about WiDS Villach can be found on our website www.widsvillach.org.

At the beginning, the guests of honor Ulla Birnbacher (Vice Dean Engineering & IT Department, Carinthia University of Applied Sciences) and Sabine Herlitschka (CEO & CTO Infineon Technologies Austria) addressed their welcome words to the participants. After the presentation of a recorded lecture by Daphne Koller at the WiDS main conference from Stanford, the two Austrian data science experts Anita Kloss-Brandstätter and Hilda Kosorus reported on current research results in the fields of medicine/genetics and on the challenges in the industrial application of data science methods. Olivia Pfeiler  led through the programme and presented the regional initiative AI Carinthia. The event concluded with a panel discussion on the topic "How to deploy data science methods in industry? Pitfalls? Challenges?".
