The students are able to understand the importance of principles from nature towards design and development of lightweight and functional structures and systems.
They are able to name relevant properties of such systems and understand the relevance of integrated sensor devices for feedback.
They understand the basic methods towards design and fabrication of the aforementioned systems and concepts.
The students can apply optimization methods and design concepts to design lab prototypes and are able to fabricate and evaluate the respective systems.

The module covers the following topics/content:

  • Bio-inspired and lightweight design for robotics
  • Weight and resource optimized structures for robotic systems
  • Wearable systems for rehabilitation, assistance and support
  • Sensors and electronic skins
  • Additive manufacturing principles and sustainable manufacturing
  • Natural materials and their manufacturing

The following literature is recommended as an example:

  • M. Bodaghi, A. Zolfagharian, Smart Materials in Additive Manufacturing, Elsevier, 2022

Lecture with integrated calculation exercises,
