The students develop methodological skills in cell biology which are required for biomedical analysis or R & D projects, i.e. they can understand the respective analysis methods, they can independently plan, carry out and evaluate them and judge the results of their analysis. They are aware of the importance and the applications of cytogenetics and have gained insight into the common examination techniques. Students are able to verify the suitability of the sample material for the requested cell biological analysis,obtain missing relevant information or request the submission of new samples. The students can carry out subject-specifications in the context of the analytical process. They are able to recognize method-specific technical and biological confounding factors in the context of quality assurance,validate the analysis results and to document, transmit and archive them with the respective information technologies. They can logically select further laboratory analysis methods and assess the significance of the analysis results for clinical diagnostics, therapeutic monitoring, forensics or for preventive purposes. They can relate and implement the analytical process with an understanding of current and new device technologies. Students are able to store study materials and reagents properly. In addition, students can use information technologies for subject-specific data research, adapt new examination procedures based on manuals or scientific literature and implement or carry out new tasks with the help of literature. They know about the need to track current developments and integrate them into their work, know research-related aspects and can apply the acquired knowledge in research, science, industry or in veterinary medicine.

Modules of the1st, 2nd and 3rd semester

  • Layout and technical equipment of cell culture laboratories
  • Sterile working techniques, prevention and handling of contaminations, safety aspects in cell culture, hygiene
  • Primary cultures (tissue cultures and suspension cell cultures), cell lines, immortalization of cells
  • Subcultivation and passaging of cells, cell count, transfection
  • Cryoconservation and thawing of cell cultures, production of cell lysates and pellets
  • Standardization, documentation and quality assurance
  • Cell biological assays (e.g., cytotoxicity or stimulation assay)
  • Special topics e.g. stem cells, in-vitro fertilization, tissue engineering
