Upon the successful completion of the Language Immersion Course Slovene 1, students will acquire the following competencies related to the Slovene language:

  • form simple sentences
  • introduce themselves and others
  • give personal information (e.g. telephone number, date of birth)
  • react in basic social situations
  • talk about everyday topics (work and hobbies)
  • make an appointment
  • use correct grammar (verb, noun, adjective) and vocabulary independently in everyday and work situations

This is a beginners' course for students with little or no prior Slovene language knowledge (at CEF level A1). The following language topics will be covered in this module:

  • Introduction to Slovene language and culture (language characteristics, pronunciation, spelling rules, phonetics)
  • Vocabulary for everyday and work situations
  • Grammar basics (nouns, verb "to be" ["biti"], regular verbs and irregular verbs in present tense, noun and adjective in 1st and 4th case)
  • Regional and cultural introduction to Slovenia
  • Simple everyday conversation topics including
    • introducing oneself
    • asking for professions, nationalities, and countries
    • telling the time
    • days of the week, months, seasons and numbers
  • Daily activities (world of work and recreation)
  • Time specification (regularity of activities)
