According to European Union Standards for Nursing and Midwifery (Vgl. FH-Heb-AV StF: BGBl. II Nr. 1/2006 (Version 2016)) midwifery students shall get access to adequate knowledge of the sciences on which the activities of midwives are based, particularly obstetrics and gynaecology; as well as detailed knowledge of biological functions, anatomy and physiology in the field of obstetrics and of the newly born, and also a knowledge of the relationship between the state of health and the physical and social environment of the human being, and of his behaviour; Health education and preventive medicine are parts of the training programme for obtaining evidence of formal qualifications in midwifery.
During this course students shall get an insight of non-pregnancy related physiology and pathology of gynecology, treatment methods, contraception, birth control, fertility promotion and assisted reproduction. They shall get prepared to observe and participate in counselling situations at their gynaecological internships.

Throughout this course the focus is set on midwive relevant knowledge of the field of gynecology. Gynecological examination and diagnostic methods (specula , colposcopy , smears, biopsy , MRI,... ), abnormal period cycles, bleeding abnormalities, malformation of the female urogenital system including the female breasts, endometriosis, benign and malignant neoplasms of the female genital tract and the female breasts, sexually transmitted diseases, sterility, conventional medical methods of fertility promotion and assisted reproductive contraception (methods , techniques, applications, prevention of lactation), gynecological surgery, medical and surgical abortion are discussed in this class.
Students shall be able to interpret roles and images in the female life cycle and shall be able to describe the physical and psychosocial changes throughout a woman's life. Also the psychosexual development throughout a woman's life will be discussed in this course. Students shall be able to describe psychosexual developments, rhythms and life cycle changes in order to increase fertility. Reproductive medicine, contraceptive methods and their application will also be covered in this class.
Basic knowledge about psychosexual development in childhood, youth and adolescence, hormonal and biological changes from menarche to menopause, sexual identity and orientation, natural family planning, nutrition and health promotion;
Students shall also experience their own feminity and work on separation from the ideal body image.
