Learning outcomes of the module/competencies
The students

  • know the elementary concepts of linear algebra and analytical geometry as well as one-dimensional differential and integral calculus and
  • are able to apply these skills in a practical way in the advanced modules of the degree program.

ILV Applied Mathematics 1, 1st semester (3.5 SWS, 5 ECTS Credits)

The module includes the following main topics from the field of linear algebra and analytic geometry

  • Vector spaces (vectors, linear independence, generating systems and bases, dimension, subspaces and subspaces)
  • Vector products (scalar and vector product, norm, orthogonality)
  • Matrix calculation (basic arithmetic operations, determinant and inverse matrix, rank)
  • Linear systems of equations (homogeneous and inhomogeneous systems, solvability, Gaussian elimination method)
and the analysis:
  • Number sequences, limit value concept, continuity of functions
  • Concept of the one-dimensional differential, elementary differential calculus
  • Concept of the one-dimensional Riemann integral, elementary integral calculus, improper integrals

The following basic literature will be used in the module:

  • G. Teschl, S. Teschl: "Mathematik für Informatiker, Band 1", Springer, 2006;
  • K. Meyberg, P. Vachenauer: "Höhere Mathematik 1", Springer, 2003;
  • K. Burg, et.al.: "Höhere Mathematik für Ingenieure, Band I: Analysis", Springer, 2012;
  • K. Burg, et.al.: "Höhere Mathematik für Ingenieure, Band II: Lineare Algebra", Springer, 2012;
Further relevant literature will be announced during the module if necessary.

  • Lecture,
  • Treatment of exercise examples, accompanying use of computer algebra systems (MATLAB) and
  • digital media for self-study.

Integrated module which is continuously assessed:

  • Cooperation,
  • Written and oral partial examinations
