The students

  • know the basics of discrete mathematics
  • are proficient in dealing with basic discrete structures of information technology.

The module focuses on the following topics:

  • Propositional logic and predicate logic (propositions and propositional forms, propositional-logical connections, implications and equivalences, Boolean algebra),
  • Sets (concept of sets and elementary sets, set operations and calculation rules, set products),
  • Relations (concept of relations and equivalence relations, properties),
  • Functions (concept of function and elementary properties),
  • Number sets, number theory (modular arithmetic, Euclid's algorithm), combinatorics (basic counting models)
  • Graph theory (basic structure, definitions and applications)

The following basic literature will be used in the module:

  • G. Teschl, S. Teschl: "Mathematik für Informatiker, Band 1", Springer, 2006;
  • M. Schubert: "Mathematics for Computer Scientists", Springer, 2012;
  • P. Stingl: "Mathematik für Fachhochschulen", Hanser, 1999;
Further relevant literature will be announced during the module if necessary.

  • Lecture,
  • Exercise examples,
  • Accompanying use of computer algebra systems (MATLAB) and digital media for self-study.

Integrated module which is continuously assessed:

  • Cooperation,
  • Written examinations
