The students understand the key fundamentals of chemistry and are thus able to follow chemistry-related topics, both in their occupational functions and in other courses, like material sciences, corrosion and corrosion prevention, electrochemical batteries etc., both passively and actively. In addition, the students should be able to single-handedly conduct simple stoichiometric calculations.

The students are furthermore able to assess chemical hazards and hazard sources and act accordingly.

An Introduction into the fundamentals of chemistry, with focus on physical chemistry and basic stoichiometry:

- basic terms and chemical symbols

- periodic table of elements

- states of matter and state transitions

- fundamentals of inorganic nomenclature

- fundamentals of stoichiometry

- chemical equilibria

- fundamentals of reaction kinetics and catalysis

- acids, bases and chemical buffer solutions

- oxidation states and redox reactions

- fundamentals of electro-chemistry

- basics of electrochemical energy storage

- an introduction into corrosion and corrosion prevention

- fundamentals of toxicology and safe working with chemicals
