Nowadays humans interact with machines (mainly computers) through user interfaces. Though, designing and implementing useful, effective and "nice" interfaces are not trivial tasks. Both, designers and engineers, should know how to measure this usefulness and efficiency and "nice looking acceptance" during their design and construction tasks of a product interface (say a software system or an electronic device). In this course, on the one hand, students get theoretically familiar with the most relevant issues when designing and implementing interfaces. It is a journey through definitions, examples, problems and solution approaches. On the other hand, this course focuses on the methods for evaluating the "quality" of human-machine-interfaces, in specific words "usability evaluation methods". Thus, the paradigm shift is made to explicitly show the students how to know if that what they are designing (or implementing) is really usable or not (and to which extent, when and why). The students will learn to perform two complete (well-known) usability evaluation methods, Heuristic Evaluation (an inspection method made by experts with experts) and Thinking Aloud (a testing method conducted by experts with test persons).
