The students should have a clear understanding of the simulation techniques of electromagnetic fields on PCBs. Design methodologies for PCBs to avoid crosstalk and ensure signal integrity are well known.

The course starts with a discussion of wave propagation in free space and media. Next, wave propagation in transmission lines will discussed in frequency domain and in time domain. It follows an introduction to the field simulation tool HFSS. Using HFSS, the electromagnetic fields of a set of PCB structures will be simulated. The scattering parameters as well as the Z-parameters of the structures will be calculated.
