On successful completion of the course, students:
- Have developed reading and note-taking skills to identify key ideas and arguments presented in an academic text;
- Can summarize academic texts appropriately in written and spoken form
- Can write an argumentative essay giving reasons in support of and against a particular viewpoint, citing relevant sources;
- Can express themselves grammatically accurately and coherently using appropriate register and context specific vocabulary to clarify cause and effect, problems and solutions;
- Can lead a discussion/debate, share and express opinion, incorporating supporting arguments on topics of interest and relevant to their field of study
The course will cover the following topics/content:
- Team debate & building a strong spoken argument;
- Introduction to academic research, selecting and citing appropriate sources;
- Critical reading & note-taking strategies;
- Summarizing academic texts;
- Academic vocabulary;
- The argumentative essay and academic writing style;
Authentic materials will be provided by the lecturer and adapted to student needs.
