  • European Beech forests are vital for the climate. Under global change, individual beech trees show increasing differences in survival and growth, suggesting a variation in their genetic potential to adapt. We don't fully understand which specific genes make some trees more resilient. To map the complex link between a beech tree's genes (genotype), its physical traits (phenotype), and the environment it grows in. A team of scientists from four countries is combining two cutting-edge tools:

    1. Genomics: Sequencing the DNA of many beech trees to create a pangenome (a comprehensive genetic catalog).
    2. Remote Sensing: Using high-resolution drone and satellite imagery to quickly and precisely measure the trees' performance and surrounding environmental conditions across entire landscapes.

    By aligning these genetic and remote sensing datasets, the project aims to identify the key genomic features responsible for the beech's ability to adapt to changing environments. This research will provide essential information and tools for the conservation and adaptive management of European beech forests facing increased stress from climate change.
