  • Light pollution (LP), caused by artificial lighting disrupting the natural rhythm of day and night, has wide-ranging impacts on biodiversity, human health, energy consumption, climate, and cultural heritage, as it reduces insect populations, alters animal behavior, interferes with circadian rhythms and melatonin production, increases CO₂ emissions through excessive electricity use, and obscures the starry sky that has historically guided human navigation and science; despite 80% of the world’s population (99% in continental Europe) living under polluted skies, awareness remains limited, which is why the RisingSTARS project engages children and youth in exploring LP as a tangible issue linking local experiences (e.g., schoolyard lighting) with global challenges like climate change, guiding them through workshops, excursions, and experiments to develop practical solutions while fostering interest in research, technology, and innovation, supported by partners such as the E.C.O. Institute for Ecology, UNESCO Chair at FH Kärnten, Preworks GmbH, and ARCH+MORE, with age-appropriate approaches ranging from primary school lessons on day/night cycles and night biodiversity to secondary school projects on technical solutions and career opportunities.
