After 6 months of inspiring and eye-opening expert talks about multilingualism, Sietar Austria is happy to invite you to the final talk to celebrate our success.

The SIETAR Austria team, based at CUAS in Villach, experiences and values different languages and cultures on an everyday basis. After the great success of Thriving Thursdays - Mindfulness matters, SIETAR Austria continued with expert talks series, called “Thriving Thursdays: Multilingualism Matters”. The format remained the same and wasn’t less successful either.

On July 15th 2021, at 6 pm. Dr. Cindy Blance speaks on “Language learning trends in a year like no other: The 2020 Duolingo Language Report” at the last event in this series.

How did our language learning habits change during covid19? 30 million new people take up language learning in the weeks after lockdown and English remains the most popular language to study; Spanish overtakes French as #2. Which countries study which languages?

Speaker:

Dr. Cindy Blanco is a senior learning scientist at Duolingo where she works to develop effective teaching products based on language-learning research. Dr. Blanco studied linguistics and languages, earning a master's in Spanish linguistics and a PhD in linguistics and later working as a postdoctoral researcher in cognitive psychology. Her academic research focused on language acquisition, bilingualism, and phonetics, and she studied language learning in infants, children, and adults. At Duolingo, Dr. Blanco's recent projects have included a deep-dive into learner choices and behavior around the world and communicating with language enthusiasts about linguistics and learning sciences through the Duolingo blog, interviewing experts on social media, and working with journalists.
