The World Network of Biosphere Reserves comprises 748 biosphere reserves in 134 countries, 23 of which are transboundary protected areas. Biosphere reserves are model regions for sustainable development that promote the coexistence of people and nature, the exchange of knowledge, poverty reduction, respect for cultural values and the ability of society to deal with change and thus make a sustainable contribution to the implementation of Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The proceedings of the EuroMAB 2022 conference held in the Nockberge Biosphere Reserve in September 2022 have now been published in a bilingual conference volume to mark International Day for Biosphere Reserves. The Nockberge Mountains of Carinthia provided the setting for this international conference, which served as an exchange and networking platform for the latest developments in biosphere reserves around the world.

After an introduction to the topic, the conference proceedings contain a review of the findings from the 13 workshops and a comprehensive presentation of the EuroMAB youth programme, which took place for the first time. One key element of the conference was the innovative workshop format on current topics and challenges in the management of biosphere reserves, which combined indoor and outdoor learning experiences.
