The students
- define and describe psychiatric and psychosomatic diseases.
- explain the basics of medical diagnostics and treatment (e.g. pharmaceutical treatment).
- explain major features specific to diseases based on selected case studies, taking into account contraindications, and deduce a corresponding patient-centred treatment plan for individual patients and/or group settings.
- apply techniques to regulate relationship and communication in a psychiatric context.
The course deals with the following subjects/contents:
Theoretical contents:
- General psychiatry
- Psychiatric institutions in Carinthia
- "Unterbringungsgesetz" (legislation concerning the compulsory hospitalisation of mentally ill people)
- Therapeutic stance and communication (client-centred concept of self)
- Disorder models for relationship management
- Various learning theories relating to pathogenesis
- Dealing with aggression
- Causes, symptoms, diagnostics, development, pathophysiology, medical therapy for selected pathologies (e.g. addictions, schizophrenia, affective, personality, neurotic, stress-related and somatoform disorders such as eating disorders, etc.)
- Impact of medication and effects on movement behaviour
- Diagnostic assessment and initial therapeutic contact
- Working in therapy groups with a focus on information and education, reflecting on one's experience, perceiving boundaries, observing group rules, perceiving changes, etc.)
- Working in individual settings and the aspects of self-efficacy
- Working with dance and music
- Therapeutic boxing

Lecture, discussion, case studies and practical exercises
Final examination:
Written intermediate test, continuous assessment and final oral reflection of a case example in a plenary session
Cumulative module exam: The grade from "ILV Physiotherapy in Psychiatry" is incorporated into the module grade with a weighting of 57%.
