The students

  • define and describe psychiatric and psychosomatic diseases.
  • explain the basics of medical diagnostics and treatment (e.g. pharmaceutical treatment).
  • explain major features specific to diseases based on selected case studies, taking into account contraindications, and deduce a corresponding patient-centred treatment plan for individual patients and/or group settings.
  • apply techniques to regulate relationship and communication in a psychiatric context.

The course deals with the following subjects/contents:
Theoretical contents:

  • General psychiatry
  • Psychiatric institutions in Carinthia
  • "Unterbringungsgesetz" (legislation concerning the compulsory hospitalisation of mentally ill people)
  • Therapeutic stance and communication (client-centred concept of self)
  • Disorder models for relationship management
  • Various learning theories relating to pathogenesis
  • Dealing with aggression
  • Causes, symptoms, diagnostics, development, pathophysiology, medical therapy for selected pathologies (e.g. addictions, schizophrenia, affective, personality, neurotic, stress-related and somatoform disorders such as eating disorders, etc.)
  • Impact of medication and effects on movement behaviour
Practical contents:
  • Diagnostic assessment and initial therapeutic contact
  • Working in therapy groups with a focus on information and education, reflecting on one's experience, perceiving boundaries, observing group rules, perceiving changes, etc.)
  • Working in individual settings and the aspects of self-efficacy
  • Working with dance and music
  • Therapeutic boxing

Lecture, discussion, case studies and practical exercises

Final examination:
Written intermediate test, continuous assessment and final oral reflection of a case example in a plenary session
Cumulative module exam: The grade from "ILV Physiotherapy in Psychiatry" is incorporated into the module grade with a weighting of 57%.
