The students
- know the most important methods for constructing a tunnel
- know the Austrian regulations and are able to apply them
- know the individual steps required to construct a tunnel (from planning to the end of the shell)
- know international standards and procedures regarding contracts and risk
An example project is used to show the development of tunnelling from the 19th century to the present day.
The construction of a tunnel is explained using an example project:

- Tendering and contract
- Construction
- Billing
- Portal and approach situations
- Cyclical drives
- Continuous tunnelling
- Crosscut production
- Fault management
The following topics are also offered (depending on the time available and in consultation with the students):
- Contract and risk in tunnelling, national and international
- The importance of time in tunnelling (time-dependent costs, productivity, etc.)
- Documentation in tunnelling
- Special techniques (cut-and-cover method, cut-and-cover method)
