The students

  • learn various design principles in 2D and 3D.
  • are proficient in the use of various tools for creating 2D/3D graphics.
  • know the difference between bitmap and vector graphics and their various uses in different 2D application scenarios.
  • are able to create 3D models of templates, sketches or real objects using common methods and workflows.
  • master the basic material workflows for a realistic representation of virtual objects.

The module covers the following topics, among others:

  • Bitmap and vector graphics
  • Sprites, spritesheets and tilemaps
    • 2D animation techniques
    • Animations with animated sprites
    • Animation with vector graphics
    • Color palettes
    • Tools for the design of
  • Material and physical based rendering
    • Material workflows (metal vs dielectric)
    • Light
    • Textures, Texture Brush Editing
    • Energy Preserving specular
    • Image based reflections

  • A. Thorn, R. Hess: "Blender Foundations: The Essential Guide to Learning Blender 7.x" , Focal Press, 2018;
  • Online tutorials: A series of online tutorials (Udemy, Blender Cloud, Youtube, etc.) are provided as part of the module via the online learning platform.

  • Moderated group work,
  • Lecture,
  • Project
  • Several workshops (e.g., materials, modeling, etc.) are held as part of this module. During the workshops, a solution is to be developed on the basis of a given task, which is then presented.

Integrated module which is continuously assessed:

  • Cooperation,
  • Projects,
  • written thesis
