Students understand the principles of NATM and of mechanical excavation and have available extended information regarding regular support and lining systems as well as specialized techniques. They are able to classify project specific important boundary conditions and based on them to choose the technically and economically most suitable method as well as relevant key equipment.

Basic tunnelling methods, Rock mass behavior, NATM, Rock Classification systems, Tunnel support means, Extended information regarding excavation methods with drill and blast and mechanical excavation systems (TBM, shielded TBM, roadheader) and specialized excavation techniques for particular conditions like pipe roof, compressed air, freezing, injections. Single and double shell tunnel lining systems with shotcrete and cast in place concrete and precast elements.Information about relevant equipment and installations: drill boomers, mucking equipment, shotcrete machines, compressed air installation, TBMs and backup installation. Fresh air supply systemsExcavation of small diameter tunnels.Integrated exercises support the learning process.
