Carinthia. The Goldene Unke was awarded and the most nature-oriented and nature-conserving construction project was honoured.

The Goldene Unke was awarded on 17 September 2021 at the ÖKOBAU trade fair. Submitted projects were closely scrutinised by nature conservation experts during the expert evaluation. Conservation experts have the ability to identify and evaluate opportunities in the field of nature conservation in construction.

The high-calibre jury consisted of Sara Schaar (Advisory Council for Nature Conservation), Christoph Aste (Chamber of Commerce), Klaus Kleinegger (AKLR Department of Nature Conservation), Josef Knappinger (ZT Chamber), and Martin Schneider (Chair of the jury - Carinthia University of Applied Sciences). These qualified jurists determined which project would receive the Goldene Unke award. "The Goldene Unke award shows how important the education of the nature conservation specialist is," Schneider explained.

In a lively discussion, the jury decided that the ÖBB project Nature on the Train would receive the Goldene Unke. In Granitztal, the ecological situation has improved thanks to the measures taken by ÖBB. In this project, not only were the interventions in nature compensated, but a positive ecological balance was achieved. Among other things, three water bodies were created for yellow-bellied toads and the protected kingfisher was able to find a new habitat in the Granitztal. During the construction of the Granitzbach, great attention was paid to the riverbed and monitoring. Schaar notedy, "Bringing outstandingly implemented construction projects before the curtain was the great goal of the Goldene Unke."

"The Goldene Unke" is related to the unique Austrian training to become a nature conservation specialist. The submitted projects have clearly shown the areas of tension and solutions in the intersection of nature conservation and construction. The nature conservation specialist offers the possibility for nature conservation and the construction industry to find joint solutions.

Identifying and highlighting innovations in nature conservation in construction was the major goal of this award. The competition helped to recognise successful implementations in the sector and to motivate companies to implement projects in a more nature-friendly way, as well as to bring successful projects before the curtain.
