Using knowledge about data as a basis for decision-making

In the winter semester of 2021/22, the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences will launch the career-friendly Master's degree programme "Applied Data Science"*. Companies in the national and international environment are looking for so-called data scientists who, with the support of technical tools and the application of theoretical methods, can generate relevant information from large amounts of data and derive recommendations for action from it. Developed in close coordination with companies and institutions such as Fraunhofer Austria Research, Infineon Technologies Austria, Kabeg, KAI Competence Centre, Kelag, Silicon Austria Labs and Stadtwerke Klagenfurt, students are offered an English-language Master's programme with a sound education and high application orientation.

Numerous companies have collected large amounts of data in recent years and are now faced with the challenge of utilizing these data collections and generating added value for their company. The experts required for this must be familiar with the entire data value chain - the newly planned master's degree programme "Applied Data Science"* at Carinthia University of Applied Sciences takes this topic into account. The contents of the course range from the efficient collection, transmission and storage of data to the evaluation and subsequent visualization of the knowledge gained. This knowledge is enriched by knowledge of legal and ethical framework conditions. "Current methods from the fields of machine learning as well as artificial intelligence are used in the evaluation. A special focus lies in the high application orientation through the accompanying project, which extends over three semesters," explains Markus Prossegger, interim programme director of the four-semester master's programme "Applied Data Science "* at FH Kärnten. "Our goal is to create an attractive offer for students and, in coordination with our partner companies and institutions, to provide an educational profile that meets current market requirements." The professionally organized curriculum relies on contemporary methods of knowledge transfer such as blended and project-based learning, comprises 120 ECTS credits and lasts four semesters including the master's thesis. A total of 16 study places will be available in the winter semester 2021/22. The first graduates will graduate in summer 2023 and will be in great demand on both the national and international job markets.

Admission requirements for the Master's programme "Applied Data Science"

The admission requirement is a completed Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject or the completion of an equivalent degree at a recognized domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution. The subject relevance requires that 10 ECTS credits from the field of computer science/programming as well as 10 ECTS credits from the fields of mathematics, statistics and algorithms and 5 ECTS credits from the fields of data management, data structures and databases have been completed as part of the degree programme. The Master's programme is offered in English, therefore language skills at level B2 are required. Further information & online application:
