The 13th International Conference on Remote Engineering and Virtual Instrumentation (REV) took place from 24-26th February in Madrid, Spain. More than 120 participants from 29 countries took part in presentation and lab sessions as well as workshops about the field of Online Engineering. Main conference themes are Virtual and Remote Laboratories, Smart Labs, Telerobotics and Telepresence, Teleworking Environments, Human Computer Interfaces, Standards and more.

Michael Auer, professor of Electrical Engineering, Founding President and CEO of the International Association of Online Engineering (IAOE), introduced with an overview about the development and significance of the conference.

It was in 2004 when the REV conference series started in Villach focusing on the upcoming use of the Internet for Engineering tasks and the problems around it.  Since then the situation regarding Online Engineering and Virtual Instrumentation has changed radically. Today these two typical working areas of most engineers are connected with themes like Internet of Things, Cyber-physical Systems, Collaborative Networks and Grids, Cyber Cloud Technologies and Service Architectures.

The IAOE is an international non-profit organization with the objective of encouraging the wider development, distribution and application of Online Engineering (OE) technologies and its influence to the society. The REV conference is the annual conference of the IAOE, which was founded in 2006 during the third REV conference in Maribor, Slovenia.

IAOE has now 2.190 individual members and 11 institutional members, among them National Instruments, Agilent Technologies, MathWorks, EMONA, Fluke. After conferences in Brasov, Mariobor, Porto, Düsseldorf, Bridgeport, Stockholm, Sydney, Bangkok and Bilbao the REV2017 will take place from 15-17 March 2017 in New York.
