By the complete theoretical introduction and the intensive practical phases using established GIS and free geovisualization software the participants shall understand the principles of thematic cartography and geovisualization comprehensively. Furthermore they shall be prepared to successfully solve advanced questions concerning user-adequate visualization of geographical data met in every day work life.

Geovisualization covers all aspects of computer graphics which helps tounderstand massive numerical data captured by simulation systems ormeasurements. In contrast to a fully automatic analysis, the finalanalytic step is left to the user, thus utilizing the power of the humanvisual system. Geovisualization sets the focus on geographic data. Thefollowing topics will be covered: surface rendering, volume rendering,terrain rendering, photo realistic versus non photo realistic rendering,animation and how this visualization can be presented using webtechnologies. In the lab exercises the students learn to work with open source visualization tools and the application of open standards for web visualization.
