The graduates know the basics in the theories of technology (ethics of technology, issues in technology genesis and technology implementation) which concern the concept of technology as a central medium for the forms of social communication and the human interpretation of the self and the world.

The basics of ethical and philosophical competence in the area of technology ethics are gained in a normative manner. This access of social-philosophical-political issues is discussed in regard to bioethics as "trans-sectoral technology ethics" (fallacy).

In particular, the graduates gain an understanding of the challenges of dealing with new options of action in high tech medicine. They are able to recognize, to analyse and to assess (bio)ethical problems in the development of new technologies. They understand the approaches and the evaluation of technological development in respect to the priorities of people with disabilities.

In case of technological development the students are aware of accessibility and the possibilities of "design for all".

The students are introduced to the interface of medical technologies in "AAL" developments (ambient assisted living) and know about research findings for the needs analysis, their usability and their acceptance as a basis of integral "AAL" evaluation strategies.

The knowledge is furthermore used to reflect upon their professional identity.

This lecture links the following topics: current developments in modern biomedicine and biotechnologies and the debates of human enhancement in the Disability Studies. On the one hand, the possibilities and limitations, such as prenatale, preimplantive and predictive diagnostics, are discussed. On the other hand, these possibilities improve the situation of people with disabilities, but they can also contribute to a problematic normalisation, which stigmatises and eliminates certain forms of disability. The biomedical progress should include the perspectives of people with disabilities and involve them into technological developments.
