The students understand how compression technologies for image, audio, and video data work. They know about common multimedia data formats for coding, storage, and transmission of image, audio, video content.They become familiar with state-of-the-art format specifications.

The course focuses on data compression technologies and multimedia data formats specifically interesting for network engineers. It provides fundamentals of multimedia coding by providing basics of lossless/lossy, image, video, audio compression techniques followed by selected state-of-the-art multimedia data formats such as JPEG, JPEG2000, MPEG-1/-2/-4 video, AVC, SVC, MVC, HEVC, 3DVC, and MPEG Audio. Additionally, storage / container formats (for image, audio, video) are discussed as well as transmission formats for both broadcast (M2TS, DVB) and broadband (RTP, DASH) are discussed.
Within the practical part, students will revisit basic compression technologies and they will implement a fully JPEG compliant encoder in Java (incl. color conversation, subsampling, discrete cosine transform, quantization, and entropy coding). Finally, students will look into broadcast/ broadband multimedia streams including the analysis thereof.
