Based on an understanding of the general principles of medical mycology, virology, parasitology, and infection epidemiology, as well as the physiological and pathophysiological regulatory mechanisms of the human organism and the understanding of the interactions of infectious agents with the human host, students are able to, based on a doctors order, carry out the biomedical analysis process (consisting of the preanalytical, analytical and post-analytical phase) in microbiology, virology and infection related hygiene as part of the overall medical process independently and autonomously; they i:e.:

  • Have a profound overview regarding medically relevant microorganisms, viruses and parasites especially about their causality in relation to and their connection with infections
  • Can apply algorithms for the virological-serological diagnosis of viruses such as e.g. HIV, HBV, HAV, HCV, EBV, CMV as well as influenza viruses and interpret the results
  • Can assign the relevant microbiological and / or infection-hygiene analyzes to the respective bioanalytical and medical question and understand the requirement with regard to the requested laboratory tests and judge whether the available examination material is suitable for the requested microbiological analyzes
  • Know the preanalytical influencing and method-dependent disturbance variables and their effects on the respective laboratory examinations
  • Are able to recognize, correctly allocate and correct simple mistakes in the execution of a method
  • Know and can apply relevant legislation in the field of microbiology and hygiene
  • Are able to select, plan, perform and evaluate selected mycological, parasitological, virological and infection-hygienic analysis methods including infection serology depending on the research question / indication, to generate the laboratory findings and to carry out and assess appropriate quality assurance measures
  • Can document the test results with existing information technologies
  • Can properly handle the storage, transport and disposal of assay materials and reagents
  • Can assess the significance for clinical diagnostics / monitoring / surveillance, link the different mycological, parasitological, virological or infection serological examination results (possibly patient-related), check their plausibility and integrate them into an overall picture; on the basis of the available laboratory results, they are able to logically select and justify possible further laboratory analysis

  • Diagnosis, prevention, epidemiology and taxonomy of fungi, viruses and parasites as infectious agents in human medical routine and essential organisms in veterinary medicine
  • Mycological analysis including pre- and post-analysis, quality assurance, method selection
  • Parasitological analysis methods, including pre- and post-analysis, quality assurance, method selection, as well as sample-specific examination procedures in human and veterinary medicine
  • Virological including infection serological analysis methods, including pre- and post-analysis, step-by step diagnostics and characteristics of the work in the virology laboratory (safety regulations, vaccination, reporting, animal testing), standardization of measurement methods, quality assurance, analysis methods, algorithms for virological-serological diagnosis of selected viruses
  • Generation of medical reports, transmission of reports, reporting practices according to legal regulations, relevant directives, guidelines, standards
  • Laboratory exercises on mycological, parasitological and infection serological analysis procedures, including documentation, validation and interpretation of results (including pre-and post-workplace preparation)
