The students know the physical, mechanical and optical fundamentals of microscopy as well as the components and functions of a microscope. They can independently adjust settings correctly, considering ergonomic aspects, and know common microscopical techniques. Students are able to identify sources of error, can fix simple errors and carry out a professional cleaning and the appropriate maintenance.
Based on physiological and cell biological knowledge, the students are able to morphologically describe hematopoietic cells of the peripheral blood as well as their progenitor cells in the bone marrow.
In addition, they will learn the basics of clinical urinary cytology including the description and relevance of sediments and gain microbiological knowledge of morphological form elements and their different manifestations.
- Introduction to microscopy techniques (bright field microscopy, Köhler illumination, care, cleaning, errors and their correction)
- Morphological hematology: Nomenclature and morphological description of cells of the hematopoietic system in the peripheral blood smear and bone marrow
- Microbiology: Morphological differentiation of Gram-positive / Gram-negative bacteria including differentiation of diverse manifestations; detection of hyphae and fungal spores
- Laboratory exercises: microscopic analysis of form elements in the differential blood smear of the peripheral blood; basic features of microbiology
