Students shall aquire adequate knowledge of the sciences on which the activities of midwives are
based, particularly obstetrics and gynaecology. The students shall have acquired basic knowledge and skills in dealing with the medical language that enables them to follow this class more easily in the first semester. This course is focusing on midwifery specific research.
The students shall have acquired basic knowledge and skills for the usage of medical language that enables them to understand relevant literature and to attend public talks and congresses. They shall also have applied basic concepts for written thesis and oral presentations in a linguistically correct manner.
Also, students shall have been able to selectively and efficiently research literature and to document the research according to reasearching strategies taken and present their way of fulfilling the task. Students shall have learned how to develop a relevant hypothesis and how to use various techniques of reading and understanding scientific texts. They shall have been capable of critical reading of sources and shall have gotten familiar with usual citation and how to implement it correctly. The differences between qualitative and quantitative research will be discussed in this class.

Students shall work with the theory and practice of midwifery and nursing, their research ,concepts and the principles of evidence-based medicine and midwifery. They shall get to know subject-specific databases and publications and expand their skills of research in the library and the internet. They shall start to review literature and question different research models and results.
Students shall be able of writing abstracts and use presentation techniques of scientific work like posters and improve their presentation techniques throughout the semester. Topics include midwifery science and research, subject-specific databases, academic conferences, evidence-based medicine, Informed Choice and shared decision making, systematic literature search, interpretation , analysis, exemplary research, research questions and assessment of quality of obstetric relevant studies and guidelines
