According to European Union Standards for Nursing and Midwifery (Vgl. FH-Heb-AV StF: BGBl. II Nr. 1/2006 (Version 2016)) gynecological and obstetric pathology is a part of the training programme for obtaining evidence of formal qualifications in midwifery. During their internships students are ask asked to observe pathological situations and to help and react appropriatly to their educational level. The training program for obtaining evidence of formal qualifications in midwifery also includes knowledge about analgesia, anaesthesia and resuscitation, pathology of gynaecology, obstetrics and the newborn infant.
Midwives are trained to recognize the warning signs of abnormality in the mother or infant which necessitate referral to a doctor and assisting the latter where appropriate; taking the necessary emergency measures in the doctor's absence. Additionally midwives shall examine and care for the new-born infant; taking all initiatives which are necessary in case of need and carrying out where necessary immediate resuscitation; Another part of midwifery training consists of caring and monitoring the progress of the mother in the post-natal period and giving all necessary advice to the mother on infant care to enable her to ensure the optimum progress of the new-born infant.

Building on the already acquired knowledge about real, physiological processes in the early and late postpartum acquired profound theoretical knowledge about different rules and irregular patterns in childbirth and their consequences for mother and child. Students shall use the correct terminology and understand the etiology of pathological processes. They have a deeper knowledge of medicinal pain relief and the impact and use of pharmaceuticals.
