The Internet is everywhere. Private persons and employees of companies use it naturally, like phones or PCs. New applications and traffic are increasing rapidly. Real-time applications like Voice, Audio or Video are growing very fast. In contrast to classical Internet applications, like Web browsing or e-mail, they are very delay-sensitive. Furthermore, they allocate a huge amount of bandwidth resources. We require quality of service QoS for Internet traffic as we know from classical circuit switched and ATM networks. Today, packet networks are just overdimensioned. Thus, we hope the capacity is enough to serve all services with good QoS. But, network traffic engineering is not overdimensioning. Engineering is planning, implementing and verifying network capacity and performance to get reliability. During the last decade, a new theory and some sophisticated tools for IT network planning have been developed. We will have the chance to take a detailed look into these topics.
