  • Problem:Every year between 250,000 and 500,000 people suffer spinal cord injuries (SCI) caused by namely over rotation or overextension of the spine.Existing spinal protectors allow these movements and hence are insufficient to prevent these types of injuries, which cause the vast majority of SCI.Using trial and errors methods , we have designed a prototype called “adamsfour RSP” and proven its efficiency at TRL Level 4 using specially designed test beds.In order to unleash the full protective potential, the current design of RSP is in need of further medical data as the behaviour of the spinal cord during sports and impacts is still vague and needs to better defined.Approach:In wear sustain, we merge electronics and design to provide real time performance data from team riders and tests dummies that can be looped back in the design process so that the object, in affect, redesigns itself.The result is a cost and weight optimized “passive” design causing a significant reduction of fabrics, CO2 emissions and spinal cord injuries.As a consequence it can be transferred into a mass market technology.
