Design of Digital Integrated Circuits (ILV)

Studiengangssemester 1. Semester
Semesterwochenstunden / SWS4,0
ECTS Credits6,0
Unterrichtssprache Englisch

Goal of the course is to become familiar with the basic components (MOS transistor, pn-junction, interconnect) and understand the basic principles in the design of digital integrated circuits, all at the device and circuit level.

- Fundamentals of electrical engineering- Basic knowledge of electronic components- Basics in circuit design- Basic knowledge in the use of CAD Tools, the completion or parallel attendance of the course on CAD Tools is required for labs

The course offers lectures on the MOS components (MOS transistor topology and mask layout, pn-junctions, parasitic capacitors and resistors, the wire as component) and on basic CMOS circuits. CMOS logic circuits and it's properties like power consumption and propagation delay are explained in lectures on the MOS inverter as well as the static and dynamic implementation of combinatorial and sequential logic. Further lecture topics are the implementation methods of digital integrated circuits like full custom design, cell based design with standard cells and macro cells as well as array based design with emphasis on FPGA.

The course is accompanied by labs using industry standard CAD tools.

Course book:

- Jan Rabaey, "Digital Integrated Circuits - A Design Perspective", 2nd edition, Prentice Hall, 2003.

- Additional literatur is provided in class.
