Network Engineering and Communication

Efficient technical networks are the prerequisite for the creation of value through new IT products in the public, commercial and private sector. So-called ‘service providers’ rely on technical platforms to be able to make their services available or bring them to market. The following topics are dealt with in this context:

  • Network modeling and simulation
  • Software engineering
  • Modeling and simulation in automation
  • New didactic methods and technologies for knowledge transfer
  • Sports telematics

Network Modeling and Simulation

Networks are characterized by a high degree of complexity. This situation requires decision-making based on simulation and optimization. Currently simulation solutions for the implementation of data networks are transferred to the industry – customer references are Telekom Austria, Österreichische Rundfunk and Telekom Regulierungs-GmbH. The simulations are based on real geodata and make the cost-efficient calculation of next-generation networks as well as the assessment of the related investment risks possible.

Software Engineering

In the discipline of software engineering the research area transfers know-how to students and to industrial consumers. This involves the education of software engineering skills (e.g. management of software projects) as well as the analysis, definition, evaluation, application, and institutionalization of modern process models in software development. Particular attention is currently paid to "agile software practices/processes".

Sports Telematics

This key area deals with the needs of information and communication technologies in sports. Sports organizers are offered professional telematics support from the planning phase through to the competition event, e.g.:

  • Innovative timing and tracking systems
  • Sports event IT network engineering
  • Visualization of sports information

Self-developed hardware and software solutions stand out due to ad-hoc utilizability, high flexibility, robustness and supreme reliability.
