Medical Information Technology
Medical engineering and informatics have revolutionized the health care sector over the last few years, as shown by, for example, state of the art medical devices utilized in diagnosing medical conditions. Diagnostics especially is one of future branches that has a very high potential for growth. In the following segments of this sector, the School of Medical Information Technology has significant research expertise.
Ambient Assisted Living
The term "Ambient Assisted Living" covers the methods, concepts, products as well as the services that support and assist elderly people in their everyday lives depending on their situation while remaining unobtrusive. These technologies enable to implement assistance systems in accordance with the requirements of the elderly in order to allow them to live healthy and independent lives. For example, preventive care could include exercises especially designed to maintain and improve their physical fitness. In order to accomplish this, it is vital to develop concepts/methods that motivate the elderly to participate. Research activities include but are not limited to mobile supported devices, telemonitoring, home-based training systems to improve physical fitness, methods to support rehabilitation activities and the development of games and activities to encourage exercise and healthy living.
Image Processing Techniques in Medical Engineering
The implementation of image processing technologies in the field of medicine has increased rapidly in the last decades. Modern visualization techniques, the fast and automatic analysis of changes to tissue and/or organs are fundamental components for the determination of diagnoses and therapy planning in medical treatment processes. Objective and precise results can be achieved through the implementation of state of the art image processing software, while at the same time these software applications can drastically reduce the time necessary required for examinations and analyses. Thus, the automatic evaluation and interpretation of two, three and even four-dimensional medical image data gathered from a variety of imaging systems is currently one of the most interesting areas of research.
Information Systems & Information Security
Web-based medical information systems are playing an ever more important role in the digitalization of data in the healthcare sector. By integrating patients’ healthcare data both the efficiency and the quality of treatment can sustainably be improved. However, the security of these data must be guaranteed 100%. Current developments in the area of "Cloud Computing" place high demands not only on the standard elements such as confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity, but additionally require rigid standards for the protection of sensitive healthcare data. This requires on the one hand the integration of existing cryptographic methods as well as the development of new, innovative cryptographic techniques.
