Materials, Design and Construction

R&D work within below defined thematic areas is undertaken within the framework of student project works and master theses but also in collaboration projects with companies and other universities.

Construction Materials Technology – Materials Laboratory

Core issues are concrete technology with focus on UHPC – ultra high performance concrete – as well as material testing and corrosion protection of steel in concrete.

Actual projects deal with

  • composition, production and testing of UHPC and of innovative concrete designs
  • bond of UHPC with other construction materials
  • monitoring of corrosion parameters of reinforcement steel in concrete

Offered laboratory services include construction chemical salt analyses, non-destructive testing of concrete structures, construction damage diagnosis, potential field analysis, strength tests of composite construction materials and others.

Building Science - Sustainability

Scientific research is divided into three thematic are

  • Functionality and durability of the building envelope
  • Interaction and influence of the building envelope with/on the quality of the interior rooms
  • Construction product and construction material analyses with regard to environmental influences

Within the cooperation projects following R&D services are offered:

  • Hygrothermal analysis of the building envelope by outdoor testing either using the unique research and test unit of CUAS or o existing structures
  • In-situ-measurements in/on building structures (temperature, moisture, thermal flow etc.)
  • Analysis of the expected hygrothermal behavior of building elementrs or of interior rooms by utilizing transient simulation tools
  • Calculation and design optimization of thermal bridge details

Structural Engineering – Behavior, Design and Performance of Structures

Within the field of Structural Engineering following R&D focuses are established:

  • Reinforcement of existing structures
  • Fastening technology
  • Load bearing behavior and design of structural members
  • Optimization of structural systems and structural member layout

R&D is aiming on development and testing and evaluation of new techniques, methods and products in cooperation with companies and research institutions. For that a testing field and a steel frame for testing structural elements with loads up to 2 MN stay available. Anchor bolt testing can be done by means of a special pull-out device. The testing is analyzed by numerical simulations and the observed load bearing behavior is interpreted.
