Mobile Networks

The merging of different data transmission technologies and the necessary services to support them are two of the dominant themes in the field of network engineering. Internet and telephony providers are increasingly using a combination of data transmission, speech transmission and television (the so-called “triple play”). The vision for the future is to connect these services in combination with a different mobile wireless technologies without any disadvantages or disturbances for the users.

Areas of application for this area of emphasis are best illustrated through the example of ad-hoc networks:

Ad-hoc networks connect mobile devices (network nodes) like mobile telephones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and notebooks without a set infrastructure through wireless access points. Data are passed on from one network node to the next until they have reached the desired recipient. The data load is distributed advantageously as in networks with centralized contact points. Specialized routing processes ensure that the network is continuously updated when nodes move, enter into or drop out of the network.
