Long-term predictions are necessary, but unfortunately not possible

Monday, 30th November.2009 at 07pm In this talk Prof. Hermann Maurer will explain why long-term (technology) predictions are necessary, and why they are unfortunately not possible. As well as outlining the obvious reasons, like the fast-moving nature of knowledge, some even more important but less well-known reasons will be explained.

Afterwards, some predictions that were made in the past will be analyzed: partly entertaining, partly thought provoking, with some unusual twists. Then a prediction will be made - for a short period of time – which will massively influence our society. Considering all statements relate to technology, the talk will end with an examination of some important aspects that also deal directly with the following basic question: How dangerous is technology, and how much technology do people need to be happy? The talk is designed for a general audience.
