Medical Engineering

Modern Information Technology does not stop at the patients' bed

The most advanced information technology (IT) does not stop at the sickbed. Over the past few years the greatest developments within medicine have been made through the usage of highly sophisticated IT-solutions which have saved many patients´ lives and considerably improved their treatment.

In the future health care will be connected even closer with IT as the demand for IT-solutions in the healthcare field is enormous.  Due to new technological processes, diagnostic processes are being revolutionized, new medical treatments are being developed and even normal standard routines are being simplified.

Career opportunities for medIT graduates are excellent: many students find fixed employment during their studies. This can be accredited to a strong practice-oriented emphasis in the degree program. Close relationships with respected experts and strong partners from the private sector, e.g., IBM, ROCHE, the Provincial Hospitals’ Operating Company (KABEG), the Red Cross, and the Vienna General Hospital, etc., leads to a dynamic academic education.

Our graduates are qualified IT specialists with a solid medical technical and business administration background. Possible job positions include project managers, IT security specialists in the area of health care, heads in IT departments, medical device research and development department as well as specialists responsible for hospital and medical information systems.


'Medical Systems Engineering

The bachelor degree program medIT-Medical Systems Engineering offers a goal-oriented education in the field of medical device engineering and technology. The contents of the program encompasses the total medical engineering process chain from the signal creation (e.g brain waves) to the signal capturing and processing (e.g. EEG) up to the visualization of the captured data.  In the field of modern medicine imaging processes (e.g. CT, MRT, ultrasound, etc.) provide the majority of diagnostic relevant data.

Field specific skills:

  • Bio-sensors (EEG, blood pressure, blood sugar, etc.)
  • Bio-signal processing
  • Conceptualization, analysis, and implementation of technical systems in the healthcare field
  • Medical image development processes and imaging systems (X-rays, CT, MR, ultrasound, etc.)
  • Medical image processing for the further and new developments of medical image analytical systems

Medical Informatics

Particular features of this area of emphasis are the analysis, conceptualization and development of information systems in the healthcare field.  Our students acquire special skill sets in the areas of medicine, information technology and telemedicine in order to comprehend, develop, and optimize the organizational structures and processes in the healthcare field.  The focus of this degree program area of emphasis is the conveyance of knowledge needed to network the different actors in the healthcare field in order to improve the treatment processes for patients.
