Geoinformation and Environment

Utilizing information technology to model the environment to better understand it

Geoinformation systems in combination with modern technologies and core topics such as digital acquisition, analysis, processing, providing and visualization of geographic phenomena and spatial relationships provide solutions that enhance our understanding of our environment.  Geoinformation methods are used in a variety of ways: environmental protection, transportation route and resource planning, crime analysis, site selection for renewable energy technologies, protection of ecologically valuable spaces, and/or digital city maps.

In the first two semesters, initial insights in geoinformation systems (GIS) as well as fundamental courses in computer science, mathematics, and statistics are provided.  The aim of the study program is to teach students problem solving skills, and how to work in and think in interdisciplinary scientific environments.  The main focus is placed on the following topics: 

  • GIS fundamentals and GI technologies
  • Design and development of GI systems and applications (e.g., WebGIS, Geo-Apps)
  • Analytics, spatial analysis and statistics
  • Data modelling and geo-databases
  • Cartography and visualization
  • Applied projects and a practice-oriented focus

In the sixth semester, students have the opportunity to apply their acquired knowledge in a practice-oriented manner and to expand upon their skill sets “on-the-job” in the form of an internship.  The work placement internship is an important building block in a university of applied sciences education.  It prepare students to make the transition between academic theory and practical implementation and between their tertiary education and their profession careers as seamless as possible.

Graduates have excellent and exciting job opportunities both in the domestic and international job markets.  The fields of application are very diverse and to name a few:

  • Environmental protection and environmental monitoring
  • Disaster management of natural hazards
  • Population statistics and analysis
  • Location/Site analysis and geomarketing
  • Crime analysis and security management

International guest professors like Dr. Michael Leitner from Louisiana State University or Dr. Piotr Jankowski from San Diego State University deal with and discuss exciting and current issues in the field of geoinformation in their lectures and courses. Furthermore, the study program is also a strategic partner of the international GI_Forum conference (contact person Dr. Adrijana Car). ). Marshall Plan Scholarship Stipend

The Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation grants annual scholarship to students enrolled at Austrian and American universities for research stays that are focused on technology and natural sciences in the USA and Austria (a minimum of three months). Scholarship amounts vary depending on the length of stay but can be up to 10 000 euros and the scholarship is aimed at undergraduate, graduate and PhD students in the engineering and natural science disciplines.

Students of the current BSc degree program Geoinformation and Environmental Technologies have successfully participated in these international projects.
