Civil Engineers prove themselves in a challenging and fascinating occupational field and decisively help to shape it. The dimensions of their work are intriguing and specialisation offers wide-ranging possibilities – a modern, highly specialised services sector with ethical responsibility.

The Bachelor and Master degree programs in Civil Engineering embraces a broad palette of engineering-related planning and construction – from technically and aesthetically demanding buildings and complex infrastructure solutions to underground engineering  or to life-cycle management and the challenging leadership of construction sites. Responsible planning and construction grows ever more important. Innovative, well-trained engineers will be indispensable in the teams and networks of the future. Graduates have at their disposal a wide-ranging knowledge in the fundamental sciences, in materials science and building ecology, in building administration and management and a solid foundation in the field of building construction and technology.

Internationality and Interculturalism
In an increasingly globalised world, intercultural competence is a key professional qualification in every field. This demands both a reflective view on the growing multicultural diversity in one’s homeland as well as looking out beyond one’s own borders.

The Schools of  Civil Engineering and Architecture consider it very important to offer the students the possibility of a semester’s study or internship abroad. A network of partner universities around the world offer students the chance of experiencing other countries and their cultures. The compulsory study of English develops the appropriate skills for a stay abroad. Other foreign languages such as Italian, French, Spanish and Russian are offered in the form of electives.

The International Office helps students in the search for accommodation and financial support. The School Administration assists in the selection of courses to be attended while abroad and on their return to make sure that they are smoothly reintegrated into their degree programs.

An internship abroad (in the 5th semester) broadens personal horizons and provides invaluable insights into other ways of working and thinking. It is particularly important for prospective engineers and architects to “look beyond the rim of their teacup”. Close cooperation with foreign companies and Austrian firms with branches abroad enable students to find a situation that corresponds to their personal interests.

Civil Engineering Qualification Profile

The combination of engineering and architectural competence is advantageous for future engineers.  Derived from the requirements of the fields of employment the emphasis lies in the areas of construction mechanics, constructive civil engineering and construction business management.

Graduates have gained fundamental planning competence. Proficiency in the English language and the attainment of communication skills round off the qualification profile.

A consecutive continuation of the Bachelor program into the Master’s program in “Civil Engineering” is recommended in order to gain a broader and higher qualification.

Teaching Principles

Foreign Language Competence
Expertise in the English language taught over 4 semesters, is graduate requirement.

Social Competence
These modules focus on personality development in order to act responsibly and successfully in leadership and team positions.

Continuative Master’s Program in Civil Engineering
Successful completion of the Bachelor program qualifies the graduate to undertake the Master’s degree program in Civil Engineering at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences over four semesters or an equivalent master’s degree program at another FH or university. The successful completion of the Master's program in turn qualifies the graduate to undertake a doctorate at a university.

Of course graduates of the Master’s degree program in Civil Engineering can, after passing the certified engineering consultant exam or the master builder exam, go into professional self employment.
